Single Parent Holiday: Discover the Green Heart of Italy with a Fun Family Programme
05/08/2017 - 12/08/2017, Available: BOOK NOW
We will be staying at the charming 3-star country hotel La Macchia, located only 2 km away from the historic town of Spoleto in beautiful Umbria. Known as Il cuore verde d’Italia – the green heart of Italy – Umbria is brimming with natural beauty and history. Nestled amongst the rolling green hills and winding river valleys is a host of medieval hillside towns, boasting both culture and charm.
Our hotel is the ideal base to get to know this stunning part of Italy whilst having a relaxing and fun holiday with your children and other single parent families: Surrounded by unspoilt countryside and a large park with olive trees, which is also home to the hotel’s farm animals, including donkeys, hens and ducks, our hotel’s facilities include a good-sized pool with sun loungers and parasols, a spacious and partly covered terrace with views of the surrounding gardens where breakfast is served, and the main restaurant, where we will dine every evening. The cuisine’s focus is on Umbrian and Italian dishes using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
All hotel rooms are furnished in a rustic Italian style and come with air-conditioning, en-suite bathroom with hair dryer, TV, telephone, free WiFi and views of the surrounding countryside. There is plenty to do for the children in the hotel grounds, from stroking the animals, playing table tennis, volleyball and badminton to enjoying the play area or watching films in the TV room in the evenings whilst our parents enjoy a glass of wine on the patio.
The highlight of this holiday is our fun 6-day programme to be enjoyed together by parents and children, with something on offer for everybody. Your SPoH host will organize and accompany our group. The following activities and excursions are planned for your stay:
- Guided tour of the stunning Marmore waterfalls, described by Lord Baron as a “Matchless cataract… Horribly beautiful”, followed by a boat trip on Lake Piediluco
- Guided hike along the picturesque old Spoleto Norcia railway track
- Learn how to make pizza in a traditional wood oven
- A day trip to the adventure park Activo Park with rafting, zip lining, archery, high rope garden and much more
- Visit the historic city of Assisi with free time for sightseeing and/or shopping
- An evening in the nearby medieval town of Spoleto
All activities are optional, of course, and your host will be happy to organise any other activities the group might be interested in.
Umbria is criss-crossed by winding river valleys and hills along the Tiber’s central basin, and is extremely fertile, but also extends high into the Apennines Mountains. It is home to parks and nature reserves, as well as Central Italy’s two largest lakes, mineral and thermal springs, and the notable waterfall of Cascata delle Marmore, where the waters dive into the River Nera over a spectacular 550-foot drop. Umbria enjoys a wealth of Roman and Etruscan settlements, and its rich culture is strongly linked with the past, centering on cuisine, art, music and wine. Some of the country’s most beautiful and best-preserved medieval and ancient cities can be found here.
The walled city of Spoleto, 2 km from where we are staying, is a busy tourist attraction (and an insider tip), with a wonderful mix of remnants from its Roman and medieval past, great restaurants, shops and gelaterias. The city’s historic sites include a first-century Roman amphitheatre and theatre, the soaring Ponte delle Torri aqueduct, a restored Roman house, a fortress, fountains, parks, the beautiful cathedral with its frescoes, porches and works of art. The medieval city of Assisi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the birthplace of St. Francis and his order of monks. It contains an ensemble of masterpieces which have made it a fundamental reference for art history, and is home to a wide range of galleries, museums and architectural masterpieces – as well as great restaurants and boutique craft shops.

"We had an excellent time in Magredi, it was such fun but also relaxing. Our host was great and the staff at the hotel made us feel so special. The activities were great fun, the children loved exploring the farm & it was a perfect setting for relaxation. I highly recommend this holiday. "
- Elaine, Ellisia (10) & Eleanor (8) (Magredi holiday, July 2016)
"My children came home saying Magredi was the best holiday ever. They keep asking when they can see their new friends again. The setting was beautiful, the family who run Magredi were so welcoming and kind and we all enjoyed both the activities on offer and hanging out by the pool. The horse riding was a highlight but what I will remember most is the laughs with all the other parents and watching my girls play with the other kids."

"A great holiday if you like walking combined with fabulous food and wine! The hotel was very child friendly and provided excellent food every day. The hotel manager Roberta and her staff could not do enough for us. The days out were long days and as it was over 30C I would imagine that young children would struggle with the walking needed. However we really enjoyed the trips and our guide Claudia made every effort to make our stay as interesting and pleasant as possible. My son really enjoyed the white water rafting while my favourite trip was to Azzizi. We had 2 days by the pool which were excellent as we were taken to see all the animals the hotel has and we also made pizza one evening under the expert eye of the hotel chef. All in all I would highly recommend this hotel."− Jackie & James (10) - Umbria holiday, August 2016
