With tensions high not just in the Middle East, many regions now feel off-limits. Where you once jetted to Dubai for a mid-season beach break, you might now feel that you need to find a safer place to go on holiday with your kids. So, which holiday destinations are safe for families amid the current upheavals in many parts of the world? Read on to find out where can you relax and make memories with low risk and less stress because we have researched the safest holiday destinations for your single parent holidays in 2026:

Political Stability and Official Advice

If you are worried about the safety of a holiday destination, check the gov.uk site for warnings about travel to specific countries, safety and security, health risks and legal differences. If the FCDO issues a warning against all but essential travel to a country, stay clear. Not only would you invalidate your insurance by travelling there – you would also put yourself and your family at risk. These decisions are taken in cases where countries are affected by war, threat of war, risk of terrorism, an epidemic, etc.

Other Safety Criteria for Single Parents Travelling Solo

Safety isn’t just a buzzword when you’re managing everything alone whilst keeping a check on little ones. Remote island beaches, trekking the Amazon rainforest, and gazing in awe at the Giza Pyramids? Most single parents tell us that such holiday destinations are best left untouched until their kids have flown the nest. For our single parents, safety and ease of travel are top priorities.

Another factor to consider is whether a country is suitable for single parent holidays. Some countries in South America, Africa and the Middle East are too dangerous for solo travel due to volatility, conflict, or high security risks. Other countries pose a higher risk for solo female travel due to gender inequality, harassment, and risk of violent crime.

Safest Holiday Destinations for Single Parent Families in 2026

We focused on places where child safety tops the list, travel logistics feel straightforward, and solid infrastructure lets you relax. Whether you’re chasing beaches or mountains, these picks help you plan trips that build memories, not stress. So, without further ado, here are our top picks for the safest holiday destinations in 2026:

1. Iceland: Low Crime and Natural Wonders

Iceland has ranked as the world’s most peaceful nation for – wait for it – 19 years running. Crime? Almost none. Pickpocketing rates are close to zero. In Reykjavik, wide pavements and family playgrounds make strolling easy with kids. The is a place where locals leave their bikes unlocked which really says it all. Nature walks feel safe, pushchair friendly paths lead to waterfalls and feel safe even at dusk, and kids are welcome in restaurants and other public places.

If you and your children love the outdoors, Iceland is the place to be: The country’s diverse and dramatic landscapes serve as one big adventure playground whether you love wildlife, waterfalls, or geothermal swimming pools. Natural wonders, such as geysers, glaciers, hot springs, and crater lakes will leave families in awe. All in all, Iceland is a place where single parents can experience adventure, relax, and breathe freely. Book organised tours from Reykjavik or discover Iceland by car for more flexibility.

Photo: Iceland’s Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

2. Switzerland: Stress-Free and Accessible

Switzerland is another country regularly ranking in the top 5 most peaceful countries in the world. Not only that, in 2026 violent crime in Switzerland averaged at 0.5 incidents per 1,000 people – considerably lower than the UK’s annual average. Petty crime is also low thanks to high living standards and low unemployment. Tourist areas are spotless and feel safe. Switzerland quite rightly deserves to be called one of the safest holiday destinations.

Don’t fancy driving solo? No need to worry: Trains beat driving as Swiss public transport gets you everywhere. Punctual and clean, you get whisked from Zurich to the Alps in just a few hours. That’s far less hassle than trying to navigate maps, traffic, and bored kids on your own. In fact, some Swiss towns and villages are only accessible by train and/or cable car: Zermatt, Wengen, Stoos, and Mürren are some of the best known car free places in Switzerland.

Still pushing a stroller? No problem. Opt for a city trip to Zurich, one of the top fun cities in Europe to visit with kids. Visit the interactive Lindt Home of Chocolate, with the tallest chocolate fountain of its kind, hop on a boat cruise on Lake Zurich, and check out the WOW Museum with its optical illusions. Buses and trams provide step free, low floor boarding, and designated areas for pushchairs.

Prefer the countryside? Long-distance trains have family carriages with a play area (yes, you read that right!). So, a trip to the countryside becomes a fun, stress-free ride for families. Top family friendly regions are the lakeside town of Lucerne with an interactive transport museum and steamboat rides, Zermatt for its adventure playgrounds and accessible and stroller friendly hikes, and sunny Grächen, for its range of adventure activities, including monster scooters and mountain biking. What we love best about Switzerland is that almost every mountain village has a quality adventure playground at the foot or top of the mountain – reachable by an accessible cable car, of course!

Whether you are visiting big cities such as Zurich and Geneva or more remote mountain villages, you will never be far away from excellent clinics where waiting times are unheard of. So, if you are worried about the kids falling ill on holiday, you needn’t be.

Photo: Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

3. Singapore: Urban Safety and Family Focus

If you like Dubai, you will love Singapore. This city-state feels like a safe bubble in Asia. Street crime? Extremely rare because cameras and fines deter trouble. In 2026, Singapore ranks third on the GPI (Global Peace Index) with a score of 1.332.

Everything here is about family comfort and children’s safety. MRT trains have priority seats for parents, and stations have lifts and family carts. Fancy a spot of shopping with your little one? No problem: Many malls have nursing rooms, family lounges, playgrounds, and kids-friendly toilets. In some shopping malls, you can even rent pushchairs.

There are plenty of things to do for families in Singapore: Famous attractions include Universal Studios Singapore, a theme park with rides for all ages and the Water World stunt show, Singapore Zoo, and “Gardens by the Bay” with a water play area, tree houses, and plenty of shaded paths for tired little legs. Don’t forget to visit Marina Bay Sands for its beautiful architecture and the free nightly light and water show held along the waterfront.

English is spoken everywhere, so you won’t need to worry about language barriers. In many ways, Singapore is ideal for first single parent holidays abroad. It’s an urban adventure without the edge, with lush green spaces and a fusion of culture and high standards.

Photo: Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

4. Austria: City Charm and Alpine Playgrounds

With low crime rates and predictable politics, Austria ranks high on our list of safest holiday destinations in 2026. The country regularly ranks as one of the top 5 most peaceful countries worldwide. In addition, Austrians value family life, so getting around with kids is easy.

Wide pavements and thoughtful designs in cities make single parent travel easy. Take Vienna, which has more than 100 pedestrian zones. Here you will find safe playgrounds amid shops and more freedom to run around for children. It’s a far cry from chaotic streets in places like Athens. Family attractions in Vienna include Schönbrunn Zoo or the Alte Donau (Old Danube), a recreational lake with bathing jetties, lido, and water sports. Other attractions include the oldest theme park in the world “Prater”, the spa and adventure pool at Therme Wien, the Chocolate Museum, and the 5D cinema. Aside from its family focus, Vienna exudes a blend of imperial grandeur, with its vibrant coffee house culture, and stunning architecture.

If you are outdoor lovers, Austria is an excellent choice with a wide range of activities for kids of all ages. For starters, Austria has some fabulous adventure pools, lidos, and lakes providing plenty of opportunity for swimming and fun watersports like SUP and zorbing. Other popular activities include summer tobogganing, mountain playgrounds, fairytale themed walks, river rafting, paragliding, and high rope gardens for all ages. You certainly won’t need to worry about the kids getting bored on holiday in Austria because there is something for every age and taste, even on a rainy day. In fact, if you can’t wait for your next single parent ski holiday, you could take the kids up the Hintertux Glacier for some summer skiing.

Picturesque towns such as Kitzbühel and Mayrhofen in the Ziller Valley offer the perfect base for single parent activity holidays. Like many other beautiful towns in Austria, such as Innsbruck and Zell am See, they are set against a backdrop of majestic mountains and have historic old towns featuring perfectly preserved medieval and Baroque architecture.

Rural villages are equally enchanting with pretty displays of flowers and woodcraft at every corner. Like Switzerland, Austria has a high living standard, reliable infrastructure, and a culture that places a high value on family, order, and politeness, making it one of the safest places to visit in 2026.

Photo: A kid friendly walk with interactive stations in Kitzbühel, Austria

Conclusion

Check foreign travel advice and GPI scores to ensure the country you wish to travel to is safe and set to stay trouble free, but also look out for low crime rates, health care, good infrastructure, and family focus. This way, you can be sure that your single parent holiday is safe and stress-free and you can focus on the fun of exploring a new country with your kids without having to worry about the rising global conflicts.

The emirate is exceptionally safe for families, including female solo travellers. Not only that, but it is full of attractions designed with families in mind. From beaches and theme parks to cultural experiences and nature escapes, Dubai offers a balance of fun and learning that works well for both children and adults. Even better, the wider UAE provides excellent opportunities for short trips beyond Dubai, allowing families to add variety to their holiday.

Whether you are travelling as a single parent or planning a family break, Dubai can be an ideal base for discovering the region at a relaxed pace.

Exploring Dubai with Children

The city offers plenty of activities that appeal to families of all ages.

Top Attractions and Kids Activities

Let’s start exploring downtown Dubai: With over 100 million visitors a year, Dubai Mall is not just a shopping centre but also an entertainment hub and home to several major attractions. You could quite easily spend several days here, visiting sights in and around the mall, and exploring its indoor activities.

First mention goes to the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, one of the largest aquariums in the world. Being able to admire the main tank from the mall for free is a lovely surprise for kids and parents alike. It is also worth paying the entrance fee if you like the idea of walking through the tunnel and underwater zoo.

There are so many amazing indoor activities for families inside the mall that it’s hard to list them all, but here goes:

Boo Boo Laand, a huge interactive centre with different play zones

A soft play centre

Trampo Extreme where you can jump, flip, and dive into foam pits

KidZania, which allows younger visitors to explore different professions through role play.

House of Hype, a huge digital entertainment experience, a bit like a high tech illusion museum but interactive. Great for taking photos.

PlayDXB for a thrilling virtual reality experience

Hysteria, a haunted mansion

A luxury cinema with 22 screens

Ski Dubai, a popular indoor ski resort in the Middle East, complete with chairlifts, drag lifts, ski slopes, and a penguin enclosure

And that’s not all. Right outside the mall, you will find the famous Dubai Fountain, my personal favourite. The world’s largest choreographed fountain puts on breathtaking displays, with the water seemingly dancing in sync with the music. Check the Dubai Mall website for show times throughout the day – the shows are completely free.

Photo: The ‘dancing fountains’ outside Dubai Mall

Another major tourist attraction, the Burj Khalifa can also be accessed from the mall or directly from the tube station. The tallest building in the world offers views of the city and the desert beyond, especially on a clear day and around sunset.

Dubai’s Beaches

For outdoor time, Jumeirah Open Beach is a favourite with families thanks to its soft sand and calm waters and convenient amenities. The long stretch of public beach near the Burj Al Arab is perfect for relaxing and swimming.

For a more luxurious vibe, head towards J1 Beach, also known as the Dubai Riviera, which has a new playground, beach clubs, cafés, and colourful spaces where children can run freely while parents relax.

Theme Parks and Interactive Experiences

Dubai is known for its impressive theme parks, many of which make for a fantastic day out with kids. IMG Worlds of Adventure, one of the largest indoor theme parks in the world, is especially popular during warmer months. Motiongate at Dubai Parks and Resorts, on the other hand, offers rides inspired by well-known Hollywood movies, with options suitable for both younger children and teenagers. Families interested in nature and education can visit The Green Planet, an indoor rainforest that introduces children to wildlife and ecosystems in an engaging way. There is even a Legoland here.

Photo: Kayaking in Hatta, Dubai

Beyond the City: Easy Family Day Trips in the UAE

One of the advantages of visiting Dubai with children is the ease of exploring beyond the city. Roads are well maintained, distances are manageable, and day trips can be planned without stress.

Hatta: Mountains and Nature

For a completely different landscape, families can head towards Hatta, a traditional village in the Hajar mountains, bordering Oman. Here freshwater dams and outdoor activities create a refreshing escape from city life. Kayaking, short hikes and scenic picnic spots make it particularly appealing for children who enjoy being outdoors. The journey to Hatta takes about 90 minutes through increasingly dramatic scenery.

Abu Dhabi: Culture and Theme Parks

A visit of Abu Dhabi is a popular choice for families. Highlights of the UAE emirate include the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which offers a cultural learning experience, and Yas Island, home to theme parks such as Warner Bros. World and Yas Waterworld. The drive from Dubai takes around 90 minutes, making it an easy day trip for families.

Al Ain: The Garden City

The city of Al Ain in Abu Dhabi is home to the Al Ain Oasis and other UNESCO World Heritage sites. Often referred to as “the Garden City”, Al Ain boasts tree-lined roads, lush greenery and a gentle pace of life.

Child-friendly attractions include Al Ain Zoo, which is one of the region’s best, Al Jahili Fort, and Wild Wadi, a water park for young kids. If you are on holiday with teenagers in the UAE, Wadi Adventure offers water activities geared towards older kids.

Jebel Hafeet, the highest mountain in Abu Dhabi is a must-see if you are visiting the region: Its famous road winds up the majestic mountain for spectacular views of the garden city and beyond.

The Desert

Experiencing the desert is often a highlight for families visiting Dubai. Many tour operators offer child-friendly desert safaris with shorter drives, camel rides, and cultural activities. These experiences allow children to learn about local traditions while enjoying the unique landscape in a safe and controlled environment.

Choosing a private or morning safari can be especially suitable for families with younger children, as temperatures are more manageable and the experience can be tailored to your family’s pace.

Photo: Al Ain, Dubai’s garden city

Getting Around: Transport Options for Families

Dubai’s public transport system is clean, efficient and inexpensive, but exploring beyond the city with children often requires flexibility. Many families find that having their own vehicle transforms their experience, particularly for day trips where timing, comfort and luggage space become important considerations.

For families travelling from the UK or Europe, driving in Dubai is straightforward — roads are excellent, signage is clear, and GPS navigation works reliably. Having a car means you can pack snacks, water, sun cream and spare clothes without worrying about carrying everything on public transport. It also allows you to leave attractions when children are tired rather than waiting for scheduled transport.

Car hire in Dubai is competitively priced and widely available. Most international companies operate from the airport and city locations. If you’re planning multiple day trips or travelling with more than one child, consider the space you’ll need for car seats, pushchairs and the inevitable accumulation of beach toys and shopping bags.

For families who prioritise comfort on longer journeys to places like Hatta or Al Ain, full-size SUVs offer generous space and smooth motorway driving. Car hire options include Cadillac Escalade rent Dubai and similar premium vehicles, though many families find that mid-range SUVs provide perfectly adequate space and comfort at better value for a week’s hire. For single parents, having a car often provides an extra sense of security and independence, particularly when managing children’s routines and belongings.

Practical Tips for Family Travel in Dubai

Timing is everything: Plan outdoor activities early in the day to avoid the strongest heat. Most attractions open early, and mornings offer the best conditions for beach time and outdoor exploration.

Balance your itinerary: Mix busy attractions with traditional experiences and relaxed beach or nature days. Children (and parents) need downtime, and some of the best family moments happen during unstructured time at the beach or by the pool.

Pack wisely: Sun protection, reusable water bottles, and light layers for air-conditioned spaces are essential. Modest clothing, especially if you visit heritage or religious areas, are advisable. Small cooling bags for bottles and snacks on the go help keep drinks and food fresh and palatable.

Photo: Buggy safari in the desert

Creating Meaningful Family Memories

Dubai and the surrounding regions offer families the chance to combine modern attractions with cultural discovery and natural beauty. By exploring both the city and nearby destinations, parents can create a varied and rewarding holiday that suits children of different ages.

The UAE’s infrastructure makes independent travel with children remarkably straightforward. Whether you’re navigating city attractions or venturing into the desert and mountains, the emphasis on family-friendly facilities and safety creates an environment where parents can relax and enjoy the experience alongside their children.

With thoughtful planning and a flexible approach, Dubai and beyond becomes a destination where single parent families can travel comfortably, explore confidently, and return home with lasting memories that go beyond the usual tourist highlights.

The legendary Himalayas, in particular, are a place many Brits dream of visiting. In this travel guide, we’ll explore some of the most beautiful places in the Indian Himalayas, which are renowned not only for their natural beauty but also for their rich cultural heritage.

A far cry from Snowdonia and the Scottish Highlands, the “Land of Snow” (or literally translated “the abode of snow”) offers a captivating blend of ancient spirituality, breathtaking scenery, vibrant culture, and thrilling adventures. From snow-capped peaks and lush valleys to sacred temples and remote villages, the Indian Himalayas promise experiences that will stay with you long after you return home.

If you are planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip or are simply dreaming of your next big single parent holiday or solo holiday, check out our top places in India’s Himalayas.

When travellers visit India’s northernmost region, Ladakh, they are transported to a unique world filled with towering mountains, bright blue lakes, and ancient monasteries. The region is a cold desert with stunning, pleasantly quiet landscapes. Ladakh is often compared to Iceland and Patagonia, but it is much more than that: It is a place with spiritual depth and strong religious ties, which are found only in India.

Major Draws:

Pangong Lake

Nubra Valley

Spirituality

Sense of community

Kedarnath is not accessible by road and involves a 16 to 18 km trek. Kedarnath tour packages help first-time visitors simplify the journey by including transport, accommodation, and guidance for the more challenging parts.

5. Shimla – Colonial Charm in the Hills

Shimla holds a special appeal for UK travellers due to its colonial heritage. Once the summer capital of British India, the city still bears the marks of Victorian architecture, charming churches, and old-world charm. A stroll along the Ridge and Mall Road, with its panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, feels like stepping back in time.

The UK has many places that are perfect for single parent city breaks. Finding the right balance between fun, comfort, and ease of travel is key – especially when you are doing it solo. Families usually seek out places where children can enjoy themselves while also learning something new, without long journeys or complicated planning. Liverpool is one such destination. Not only does it offer a wide range of activities for families, but it also has a welcoming atmosphere and easy-to-navigate layout. Do you want to find out more? Read on..

Discovering Liverpool’s Family-Friendly Attractions

Liverpool offers a diverse mix of attractions that appeal to children of different ages. The city’s waterfront is one of the best places to start, with wide open spaces and scenic views that naturally capture kids’ attention. Walking along the docks, families can enjoy fresh air while taking in the sights of historic buildings and boats on the river.

The World Museum is a highlight for families visiting the city. Its interactive exhibits make learning enjoyable, whether children are fascinated by dinosaurs, ancient cultures, or the wonders of space. The museum encourages curiosity and hands-on exploration, which helps keep young visitors engaged for hours. Many of Liverpool’s museums are free to enter, making them accessible and stress-free for families travelling on a budget.

Photo: Liverpool’s UNESCO World Heritage waterfront

Outdoor Adventures and Green Spaces

Alongside its cultural attractions, Liverpool provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor enjoyment. Sefton Park is a popular choice for families looking to unwind. With large open areas, walking paths, and a peaceful lake, it’s an ideal place for children to play freely while parents relax. The Palm House within the park often becomes a point of interest for kids, thanks to its impressive structure and plants. The Victorian domed glasshouse offers themed activities for kids, and family events, such as craft classes, picnics, and storytelling, so look out for what’s at the time of your visit.

Crosby Beach is another family favourite. Its long stretch of sand gives children space to explore, run, and enjoy simple seaside activities. The well-known sculptures along the shore add a creative element to the visit, making the experience both fun and memorable. These outdoor locations allow families to slow down and enjoy time together away from busy city streets.

Simple Travel Tips for Visiting Liverpool with Kids

One of Liverpool’s biggest advantages for family travel is its compact city centre. Many attractions are close to each other, which reduces the need for long journeys and keeps days manageable for children. Planning relaxed schedules with regular breaks can help families enjoy the city without feeling rushed.

Staying in a central location can also make a trip more comfortable, as it allows families to return easily for rest time between activities. Options such as serviced apartments in Liverpool’s city centre can offer the space and flexibility families appreciate, while still keeping them close to key sights. Packing essentials like snacks, water, and comfortable footwear can also make exploring the city smoother and more enjoyable.

Photo: Crosby Beach

Other Top Cities for a Weekend Getaway with Kids

While Liverpool is a strong choice, other cities also work well for short family breaks. London remains a favourite due to the variety of attractions and activities aimed at children. Museums focused on science, history, and nature provide educational fun, while large parks offer space to relax and play. Despite its size, many family-friendly areas are easy to explore over a weekend.

Edinburgh offers a different but equally exciting experience. Its historic streets and dramatic architecture can feel like an adventure for children, especially when exploring castle views and old town routes. Family-focused museums and nearby green spaces make it a well-rounded destination for parents travelling with kids.

Manchester is another city that suits family weekends away. With interactive science centres, sports-related attractions, and expansive parks, it provides plenty of choice without overwhelming visitors. Its transport links and walkable areas make it easier for families to plan short, enjoyable stays.

Why City Breaks Work Well for Families

Short city trips are often ideal for solo families because they combine convenience with variety. A weekend is usually long enough to explore key attractions without tiring children out. Cities like Liverpool offer a good mix of indoor and outdoor activities, which helps families adapt plans to the weather and children’s energy levels.

Choosing destinations with walkable town centres, family-friendly attractions, and free or low-cost activities can reduce stress and make single parent city breaks more enjoyable. These elements allow parents to focus on spending quality time together rather than managing logistics.

Photo: London is another city perfect for a weekend getaway with kids.

Creating Meaningful Family Travel Experiences

Family travel is ultimately about shared experiences and creating memories. Liverpool’s combination of culture, green spaces, and accessible attractions makes it an excellent place for families to explore together. In addition to Liverpool, several other UK cities are ideal for memorable weekend getaways with kids.

With thoughtful planning and flexible expectations, families can enjoy trips that leave children excited and parents refreshed, proving that meaningful travel doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming, neither for solo parents nor two-parent families.

European families have always been keen explorers, and with flight routes set to expand again, 2026 looks to be another exciting year for discovering new places with your youngsters. Whether you’re craving sunshine, cultural depth, mountain adventures, or a blend of all three, there is no shortage of choice for holidays with teenagers.

If you feel like you and your children have already “done” Spain, Italy, Turkey, and Greece more times than you can count, this guide introduces three refreshing destinations that are growing in popularity among travellers from the UK, Ireland, and mainland Europe. Each offers something distinctive, whether it is unique landscapes, rich traditions, or memorable experiences.

Why Look Beyond the Usual Holiday Hotspots?

Traditional European holiday favourites remain wonderful, but many families with teenagers are now seeking trips that feel more meaningful and less commercial. There is a rising trend towards nature-focused travel, authentic cultural experiences, wellness-oriented getaways, active holidays such as hiking or surfing, and off-peak escapes to avoid overtourism and expand the horizon.

If you are curious about venturing just a little further for something fresh, the destinations below are worth placing on your 2026 travel list.

1. Vietnam — Culture, Cuisine, and Coastlines

Vietnam has been steadily making its way onto European families’ travel itineraries, and for good reason. Offering a mix of pristine beaches, historic cities, adventure activities like kayaking, rock climbing, and cycling, and some of Southeast Asia’s best food, it appeals to budget travellers, adventurous families, and those seeking boutique comfort

The Southeast Asian country offers the tropical holiday atmosphere many travellers look for in Thailand but with a more laid-back feel and often better value for money. Beyond its idyllic coast, Vietnam has a rich history that has shaped its identity, from ancient dynasties to its 20th century conflicts making it a powerful destination for learning and reflection.

Highlights for families with teenagers include wandering the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, cruising through the limestone islands of Ha Long Bay, exploring Hanoi’s Old Quarter, trekking the terraced rice fields of Sapa, and kite surfing on the beaches of Mũi Né.

The weather varies by region. Winters in the north are surprisingly cool and dry, whilst the south, which maintains a tropical climate throughout the year, is also notably milder, so visiting Vietnam in December is a great option. Be mindful that the typhoon season typically affects coastal areas from October to December, so spring and late autumn are particularly pleasant times to visit.

Photo: lantern festival in Vietnam

2. Sri Lanka — Adventure, Nature, and Island Life

Sri Lanka is one of the best countries to visit in Asia, when it comes to the sheer variety of things to do: Whether you want to experience wild beaches, wildlife encounters, famous tea and spice plantations, mountain hiking, surf culture, or ancient ruins and temples – Sri Lanka has it all, and you won’t even have to travel very far between these attractions.

Unlike some nearby destinations, the island country strikes a unique balance between feeling authentic and untouched, yet also comfortable and traveller friendly. It is ideal for families who want more than just a beach resort.

Other reasons to visit Sri Lanka include a year-round sunny climate, whale-watching opportunities, national parks and diverse wildlife, world-class surfing for beginners and intermediates, scenic railway journeys through tea-covered hills, and a welcoming culture where English is widely spoken.

Sri Lanka suits families with teenagers, solo travellers, digital nomads, wellness-seekers, and anyone wishing to combine relaxation with light adventure. Whether you imagine yourself sipping tea in the highlands, learning to surf, or unwinding in a quiet coastal village, this beautiful island offers something to slow the mind and lift the spirits.

Photo: Devinuwara, Sri Lanka

3. Georgia — Mountains, Culture, Wine, and Genuine Hospitality

Closer to Europe than many imagine, Georgia is a fascinating crossroads of East and West. It is the perfect holiday destination for families who appreciate stunning landscapes, rich and flavourful food and wine, and genuine hospitality. Although it is not yet overcrowded with tourists, the small country on the Black Sea has been gaining recognition for its dramatic mountain ranges, medieval towns, and distinct cultural identity.

What sets Georgia apart from other holiday destination is its breathtaking mountain scenery, ancient winemaking traditions, and a capital city with eclectic architecture (don’t miss the Bridge of Peace or Batumi Boulevard) and a youthful, creative atmosphere. For a history lesson, take your teens to the ancient fortress in Tbilisi, with parts dating back to the 4th century. For some lighter entertainment, explore the Museum of Illusions. If you have time to venture further afield, Georgia’s ancient cave towns and monastic complexes are a sight to behold. Finally, let’s not forget that Georgia boasts several popular coastal resorts along the Black Sea for summer relaxation at much more affordable prices than its European counterparts.

If you are wondering when to visit, June to August offer long, sunny days that are ideal for hiking and beach trips. For those who prefer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, September to mid-October is an excellent time to visit, with golden autumn colours across the mountains and vineyards.

Photo: Tbilisi, Georgia

Preparing for a Smooth and Worry-Free Trip

Regardless of where you are heading in 2026, preparation makes the difference between relaxing holidays with teenagers and stressful ones. Before setting off, consider the points below.

Plan early and stay flexible. Flight prices can vary significantly. Booking in advance usually saves money, but if you happen to be flexible with travel dates and departure airports, you can also unlock great deals.

Check the climate. Research the weather of your destination, especially if you want to avoid the wet and/or cool time of year. There is nothing worse than arriving at a beautiful beach resort during monsoon season.

Pack according to the climate. For humid countries, breathable clothing and sun protection are essential; for mountainous regions, include extra layers for cooler evenings. You may need clothes for more than one climate if you plan to travel across a country such as Vietnam.

Travel insurance is an essential part of planning any trip, no matter how experienced a traveller you are. It provides peace of mind in situations you cannot predict, such as medical emergencies, lost luggage, cancelled flights, or sudden changes to your travel plans. Having suitable insurance in place means you can enjoy your holiday knowing that support is available if things do not go as expected, especially when travelling long distances or outside Europe.

Health and safety. Take a small first-aid kit with basics such as pain relief, stomach remedies, plasters, and any personal medication. If travelling beyond Europe, check if any vaccinations are recommended and whether tap water is safe to drink.

Documents and entry requirements. Always check visa rules, passport validity requirements, and whether any digital entry forms are required. This is especially relevant for UK travellers post-Brexit.

Money and payments. Card payments are widely accepted across much of the world, but it is still wise to carry some local currency for markets, rural areas, and independent businesses.

Final Thoughts

The way families travel is evolving. Make 2026 about new places and experiences that stay with you and your youngsters long after the holiday ends. Wherever you choose to travel, be it the mountains of Georgia, the coastlines of Sri Lanka, or the vibrant culture of Vietnam, holidays with teenagers are about discovering new places and flavours and about making memories.

Whilst teenagers might embrace a trip to a new city, younger children can easily get bored, so picking the right destination for your city trip with kids is crucial. Just imagine carrying a toddler and a pushchair along narrow footpaths and cobbled alleyways or queuing at popular attractions with impatient, hungry kids in tow. Sounds like a nightmare? It needn’t be. There are plenty of exciting and fun cities in Europe to visit with kids. One such destination is Budapest. Here are some practical tips to help you plan your city trip to Budapest with kids:

Family-Friendly Attractions

One of the things that makes Budapest stand out as a family-friendly city break destination is the way the city presents its rich history in such a kid-accessible way. This enables parents to explore cultural experiences without feeling like they are dragging the little ones through boring museums and exhibitions.

Buda Castle & Funicular

Once a medieval fortress, the grand castle has a fairy-tale vibe to it, making it the right setting for touring as a family. Start your journey by hopping on the Buda Castle Funicular, an adventure in its own right. The historic cable car takes you to the castle grounds in just ninety second providing spectacular views of the Chain Bridge and the Danube and saving tired little feet the 15 minute walk up the hill.

Enjoy a walk around the grounds and gardens of Buda Castle, or visit one of the exhibitions now housed in the castle buildings, such as the Hungarian National Gallery, which offers kid friendly guided tours getting children of all ages interested in art.

Fisherman’s Bastion

Located on Buda Castle hill, Fisherman’s Bastion can be combined with a visit to Buda Castle or Matthias Church. With its fairytale spires and parapets, this architectural marvel looks remarkably similar to the iconic Disney castle. This is a magical castle to explore with kids, and a perfect spot to enjoy stunning views over the Danube River.

Guided tours

Sound boring? Book a themed tour – there is something for everyone, from family friendly tours including fun activities and entertaining history to tasting tours for foodie families. For holidays with teenagers, check out the Guided Segway Tours or the EZRaider tours, a fun way to explore Budapest with older kids on a unique electric ATV.

Parks & Playgrounds

Budapest is home to several parks and playgrounds. If you are visiting in the summer, make sure to check out Green Meadows Park or City Park and let your kids cool down at the splash pads and waterfall. Another popular park is Margaret Island, the city’s car-free “green lung” with its lush green lawns, medieval ruins, and beautiful gardens.

Fun Pools & Thermal Baths

Margaret Island also has a major attraction for families: the Palatinus Strand Baths, a historic lido, which today features no less than 15 indoor and outdoor pools, including a fun pool and 5-lane slide, as well as several saunas. Back in the City Park, Széchenyi Thermal Bath offers 18 geothermal pools, saunas, and outdoor pools fed by natural hot springs. The Neo-Baroque building is a stunning sight, but children under 14 years are limited to the use of the three rather grand outdoor pools.

Travelling to and Around Budapest with Kids

Getting to and around the city with kids is easy. Budapest is well-connected with the rest of Europe with many of its major cities offering direct flights. Whether you live in London or Paris, you can find your flight to Budapest with Air France and other major airlines and get your trip off to the right start.

Once in Budapest, a well- connected public transport system means you can get anywhere quickly and easily, even with kids in tow. Trams are pushchair-friendly, the metro straightforward to use, and much of the city is walkable – even in the dark. Don’t skip a ride on one of the bright yellow trams – an adventure in its own right for young kids.

When to Visit Budapest with Kids

Whether you are travelling with kids or not, choosing the right time to visit Budapest is the key to success. So, when is the best time to travel to Budapest with kids?

Spring and autumn are arguably the best times to travel to Budapest. The periods between April & June and September & October see far fewer tourists arriving in the city, the weather is milder, and prices are lower. If you are budget conscious travellers and your kids are not yet at school or have holidays during those months, you are in luck.

But don’t worry, there are also some benefits to visiting Budapest in the summer. You can enjoy the Sziget Festival, a family-friendly music and cultural festival, the Festival of Folk Arts on Buda Castle, or the fireworks on 20 August for the St. Stephen’s celebrations. And of course, August is tourist season, so all attractions are open, including Margaret Island’s water park.

Where to Stay in Budapest with Kids

It’s important to find a location with convenient access to the main local sights if you want to have a stress free Budapest city trip. Hauling the kids across town will wear everyone down before you even arrive at your chosen destination. Try to stay somewhere central to save time travelling. There are plenty of options suiting every budget, from AirBnB and fully fitted apartments to family-friendly hotels.

How to Create a Balanced Itinerary

Needless to say, a balanced itinerary is your key to success. Find a healthy mix between sightseeing and downtime and consult a make sure to consult a travel guide to Budapest for more information. A big noisy attraction should be followed by a restful evening and night in to save overtired kids and toddler tantrums. Equally, an adult museum should be paired with a kid-friendly spot, such as a park or playground, to keep all ages happy.

Whatever you do, don’t over plan – the best memories are made when everyone is rested, and the best places are often the hidden secrets that were not on your list of the top ten sights to see in Budapest.

Conclusion

Holidays with teenagers and young kids can be daunting whether you are a single parent or not. Each age group brings its own challenges, so doing a little research and finding the right city trip with kids can really tip the odds in your favour. A city trip to Budapest with kids provides the perfect balance of attractions for adults, teens, and kids. To make the most of your trip, create a balanced itinerary that caters to everyone’s fun needs involving the kids in the trip planning – it can make a world of difference.. And most importantly, take your time. Cramming a whole city into two days to save money on annual leave and accommodation is a recipe for disaster. Give yourself 3 to 4 days and leave room for spontaneous pursuits, tired kids, and unexpected events, such as a delayed flight.

Due to its extensive coastline and geographical position across two continents, the country’s landscape is as diverse as its population. From iconic landmarks and cultural experiences to glorious beaches and turquoise waters, Turkey has it all!

Holidays for single parents can be tricky to navigate when there is only one adult to keep kids and teenagers happy. So, if like the idea of learning about turtle conservation or exploring ancient ruins right next to your beach towel, then join us on our journey through the best beaches to visit in Turkey for families, starting with the Turkish Riviera.

The 5 Best Beaches in Turkey for Families

The Turkish Riviera, also known as the Turquoise Coast, is a stretch of coastline running from Izmir and Bodrom on the Aegean Sea to Alanya in the Mediterranean. Here is everything you need to know for about the most family-friendly beaches in this beautiful part of Turkey.

Iztuzu Beach: the Turtle Beach

Also known as Turtle Beach, this 4.5 km long golden beach in Muğla Province is a must-see for nature and animal loving families. The beach features unspoiled landscapes that differ from the typical beach resorts you may have visited before. In Iztuzu you and your children can learn all about local wildlife and wildlife preservation, while enjoying a memorable single parent beach holiday in Turkey. The beach can be reached by road, but locals and tourists usually take the river boat service from Dalyan.

Iztuzu Beach is uniquely positioned between the Dalyan River and the Mediterranean Sea. The proximity to freshwater, warm sands, as well as the area’s conservation efforts make the location an ideal breeding site for loggerhead sea turtles. Huge efforts are made to protect the natural beauty and wildlife here, and families can learn about wildlife conservation if they visit the Kaptan June Sea Turtle Conservation Foundation where injured turtles are treated.

Good to know: If you want to sunbathe on the beach, you need to adhere to rules aimed to ensure that the turtles are not disturbed.

Photo: Loggerhead turtles

Ölüdeniz Beach: Picture Perfect Lagoon

Travelling along the coastline of the Turkish Riviera, past Dalyan and Sarigerme, you will find Ölüdeniz Beach. The picturesque beach is featured on countless postcards and holiday brochures – and quite rightly so: Its famous lagoon is separated from the sea by a long sandbar and a protected nature reserve with calm waters that draw tourists and locals alike. The long sandy beach with shallow water make it a safe beach for families with kids.

On the main beach away from the lagoon, families can enjoy watersports and explore nearby cafes that serve delicious Turkish fare whilst the colourful paragliders dotting the skies complement the picturesque setting.

Good to know: There is an entry fee for the lagoon and the main Blue Flag beach, and both can get very busy in peak season, especially in the month of August.

Photo: Ölüdeniz Beach

Patara Beach: Sand Dunes Galore

If you are looking for a beautiful long stretch of golden beach that is not crowded, you will love Patara, considered one of the best family-friendly beaches in Turkey. Located only 60 km south of Ölüdeniz, in the province of Antalya, Patara boasts an 18 km long beach backed by large sand dunes and is a beach lover’s dream. Walk along the beach and you will quickly find a quiet spot for your family. There are shallow waters near the shore with a soft sandy bottom perfect for splashing with young kids.

In addition to large sand dunes and untouched nature, you will find many archaeological ruins here that are worth exploring. Patara Beach is also known for a loggerhead turtle nesting site, so you can learn about the wildlife preservation efforts in the area.

Photo: Patara Beach with the Taurus Mountains in the background

Cirali Beach: Unspoilt Charm

Travelling east, further along Antalya’s coastline, you will find Cirali Beach, an equally laid-back destination and even quieter than Patara. Situated near the ancient ruins of Olympos and the Chimaera flames, the beach is ideal for nature lovers seeking a serene and eco-friendly beach escape and culture vultures who will appreciate the ancient ruins perched on the cliff above.

From relaxing on the pebble beach with its clear, azure waters to hiking in the surrounding areas, there are endless possibilities how families can spend their time here. If you are visiting between late May and August, for example, you can admire the protected loggerhead turtle nesting sites and might even see some of the hatchlings later in the season.

The beautiful long beach is mostly surrounded by small family run hotels and guest houses and thus retains much of the unspoilt charm of an off the beaten path destination. The proximity to restaurants and cafés means families don’t have to go hungry after a busy few hours on the beach.

The tranquillity and natural beauty of the beach, combined with the diverse offerings for families, make Cirali a family-friendly beach destination that is truly unmatched. The lush green mountains and azure waters add to the scenic beauty.

Phaselis Beach: at the Foot of Roman Ruins

Just north of Cirali, you wilI find Phaselis Beach consisting of three pristine pebbly and sandy bays offering calm and shallow waters perfect for families with young children.

What makes Phasalis so unique are the ancient ruins of a city set between the beach and Mount Tahtali. The ancient city dates back to Roman and Byzantine periods and was once a flourishing wealthy commercial centre. You will find ancient Greek and Roman structures here, including Hadrian’s Arch, and a theatre that is a dream come true for any history enthusiast. The ruins are well preserved and shaded by pine trees, so you can cool off after a day on the beach.

Interesting fact: The 3 bays that are now frequented by beach lovers were once strategically important harbours for the export of goods such as timber and rose oil.

Photo: Cable car connecting Alanya Castle and Cleopatra Beach

Cleopatra Beach: Majestic Mountains and Castle Ruins

Legend has it that this beach was gifted to Queen Cleopatra by her lover, the Roman general Mark Anthony. This comes as no surprise, as the beautiful beach, almost 200 km east of Cirali, is surrounded by the majestic Taurus Mountains, with dramatic views of the historic ruins of Alanya Castle. Families simply love the long stretch of soft, golden sand, the clear turquoise waters and the choice of adventurous water sports on offer.

Cleopatra Beach also boasts exceptional amenities, making it an ideal destination to visit with kids. You will find plenty of cafés, restaurants, and shops here, as well as clean changing rooms and access to showers. The combination of vibrant coastal life and historic charm make Cleopatra Beach one of the best family-friendly beaches in Turkey.

Interesting fact: According to legend Mark Anthony had the sand of Cleopatra Beach imported from Egypt.

If you’re looking to make it a truly memorable day as a single parent, here are the places we think should be part of any Brighton itinerary and include fun stuff for kids of all ages, from toddlers to teens.

Visit the Sugar Gliders at the Cuddly Colony

Like most seaside towns, Brighton has a lovely beach, arcades, yummy food, and popular attractions. But where else can you find a colony of flying possums? Given the animals’ delicate skin and the sensitive nature of their eyes, flash photography is not allowed, plus there is an over-16s age restriction. So this Brighton attraction is something for holidays with teenagers.

The little flying and leaping possums, with their gorgeous large eyes and distinctive markings, will make any teenager’s eyes light up and create the most amazing memories. These lovable little critters are more than happy to be held or glide around the room, making a truly unique visitor experience, especially for the more sensitive souls.

Stroll Around Brighton’s Lanes

The pedestrianised historic Lanes are a must on any Brighton itinerary, especially if you and your teens love quirky shops. Around the corner from the Cuddly Colony, this network of narrow alleyways is filled with cafés, art galleries, and unique little shops that offer everything from vintage goods and antiques to jewellery and art. Allow some time to browse and shop before popping into a café or the famous Oyster Bar for lunch.

Pop into North Laine Bazaar

Just a few streets further, you will find North Laine Bazaar, another exciting place for young artistic types, jewellery lovers, and collectors to get lost in. From comics to retro clothing, homewares to photos and paintings – this place is an adventure in its own right, whether your children want to buy something or not. You can use the Matterport 3D map on the website to have a look around before visiting to see what’s there.

See Brighton from High Up

Having done the backstreets of Brighton, it’s time for a bird’s eye view of the city so you can get your bearings. One of the big-ticket tourist attractions is the i360 tower. Europe’s tallest platform gives phenomenal views over the city and surrounding East Sussex countryside and out to sea – weather permitting.

Booking is essential, especially if you are after one of the special experiences, like the sky walk or a climb up the tower itself! If you are not thrill seekers or have young kids, you can simply enjoy the stunning views or add a drink at the Sky Bar afterwards to make it more of an experience.

If you don’t want to pay for tickets, you could also jump on a train or bus to Seaford and take a walk along the beautiful chalk cliffs and view the magnificent Seven Sisters Cliffs for a more organic view from high up.

Experience Brighton’s Best Musicians

If your children like music, then you can head from the tower to Brighton’s Music Hall by the beach. You will find the best local artists performing here. Head over between 11 am and 8 pm on weekdays and from 5 pm until late at weekends for free entertainment, including every kind of music and DJs acts.

Take the Historic Train Along the Beachfront

If your kids’ feet are getting tired, but you want to stay out in the fresh air, hop on the Volk’s Electric Railway, the oldest electric railway in the world. There is plenty to see whilst you rest your feet. The railway started operating on 4 August 1883 and today runs up and down the beachfront between Brighton Palace and Black Rock station.

Eat Out in Brighton

Brighton has an excellent restaurant scene, and there are numerous options for single parent families and kids hungry after a busy day of travel and exploring. Among the top Brighton restaurants for early risers is Bill’s Restaurant, which is open from 8 am. It offers a range of great all-day breakfasts, including pancake stacks, eggs and much more. You can book a variety of Brighton restaurants quickly and conveniently on OpenTable.

For vegan or vegetarian families, Food for Friends has a veggie kid’s menu with pasta, pizza, a halloumi burger and a free ice cream. All fantastically priced, it makes a wonderful way to enjoy a good restaurant vibe without the children’s meals costing a fortune.

If your kids love boats and ships, then head a few miles west to Carats Café Bar on the beach, which offers indoor and outdoor dining, all day breakfasts and a seasonal restaurant menu. Located next to the canal and docks, there’s obviously plenty of aquatic stuff going on here, such as the Watersports Lagoon just down the road on the way back to the heart of the city.

Back on Brighton’s beach, a new quality restaurant has opened: The Winkle is a charming restaurant, perfect for an unpretentious quality lunch or dinner, whether you fancy seafood, a vegetarian bite, or a chicken schnitzel.

Feeling nostalgic? Give your kids a sense of classic beach holidays by visiting The World’s End pub (kids welcome until 8 pm), where you will find a number of remote-control car racing and 80s arcade games. On the menu are hot dogs, burgers, wings, and loaded fries to keep everyone happy, making this an ideal destination for both young kids teenagers.

Brighton: A Perfect Single Parent Holiday Destination

Brighton is a vibrant cultural destination, perfect not just for a day out or weekend away but also for holidays with teenagers and young children. With so many famous Brighton attractions, things to do, and places to eat in and around Brighton, you can easily fill a whole week. You could spend a day alone on the beach, another exploring Brighton’s famous Pier, with its thrilling fairground rides, and not to forget, visit some of Brighton’s many museums. Whilst the famous Booth Natural History Museum is currently closed for refurbishment, you can still check their events page for drop in days. We hope our Brighton itinerary has helped you plan your next visit. Just be prepared to be sidetracked with all sorts of artistic and exciting events that can divert young and old visitors alike.

You’re constantly balancing your children’s needs with your own, trying to create magical memories while secretly longing for just a moment to breathe and enjoy yourself. The good news? You don’t have to choose between quality family time and well-deserved personal moments. Whether you’re planning an unforgettable single parent holiday or treating yourself to a rare child-free weekend, SAIL Amsterdam 2025 offers the perfect backdrop for both.

Why Amsterdam is a Single Parent’s Dream Destination

Amsterdam practically designed itself for single parent. This compact, walkable city feels like a safe haven where you can actually relax and enjoy yourself, whether you’re pushing a stroller through cobblestone streets or sipping coffee at a canal-side café. The entire city centre is easily navigable, and the Dutch are remarkably family-friendly — you’ll find yourself welcomed everywhere with genuine warmth.

For single parent holidays, Amsterdam delivers in spades. The NEMO Science Museum will keep curious minds engaged for hours, while Artis Zoo offers a perfect afternoon of animal encounters. Vondelpark provides endless space for kids to run wild, and the city’s famous pancake houses ensure even the pickiest eaters leave happy. But here’s what makes Amsterdam special for single parents: it’s equally rewarding when you’re flying solo. Picture yourself café-hopping through the Jordaan district, taking a culinary journey through the city of Amsterdam, meandering along tree-lined canals, or discovering hidden courtyards — all at your own pace, without anyone asking “Are we there yet?”

SAIL Amsterdam: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Spectacle

Now imagine adding something truly extraordinary to your Amsterdam experience. SAIL Amsterdam, happening in August 2025, is one of the world’s largest maritime festivals, occurring just once every five years. This isn’t your typical tourist attraction — it’s a breathtaking celebration where hundreds of majestic tall ships, historic vessels, and traditional boats gather in Amsterdam’s harbour, creating a scene straight out of a maritime fairy tale.

The event draws millions of visitors from around the globe, and for good reason. Watching these magnificent ships glide through Amsterdam’s canals is mesmerising for adults and absolutely magical for children. The tall ships, some dating back centuries, create an atmosphere that feels both historic and adventurous — like stepping into a living museum where every vessel tells a story.

The Perfect Vantage Point: Your Private Floating Sanctuary

While SAIL 2025 Amsterdam is spectacular from anywhere in the city, experiencing it from the water transforms a beautiful event into an unforgettable journey.

Picture this: Instead of jostling with crowds on overcrowded viewing platforms, you’re relaxing on your own private boat with unobstructed views of every passing ship. The experienced crew handles everything while you focus on what matters — whether that’s watching your child’s face light up as a towering ship sails past or simply savouring a peaceful moment with a drink in hand as history unfolds around you.

These boats offer the perfect balance of comfort and adventure. Choose from shaded seating when the August sun gets intense or move to open areas for the best photo opportunities. The crew provides drinks and snacks, and you can even upgrade to luxury platters or champagne if you’re celebrating something special. Most importantly, it’s safe and controlled — essential when you’re managing everything on your own.

Tailoring the Experience to Your Needs

Here’s where SAIL Amsterdam truly shines for single parents: it works beautifully for both family adventures and adult escapes.

Planning a family outing? A daytime cruise offers the perfect combination of education and excitement. Your kids will be captivated as historic ships pass close enough to see every detail of their rigging and flags. The crew often shares fascinating stories about the vessels’ histories, turning the experience into an interactive lesson that doesn’t feel like school. Snacks keep everyone happy, and the boat’s safety features mean you can actually relax and enjoy the moment instead of constantly worrying.

Ready for some adult time? Book an evening cruise and prepare for pure magic. As the sun sets behind centuries-old sails, you’ll find yourself in an almost dreamlike setting that’s impossible to replicate anywhere else. Whether you’re treating yourself to solo time or connecting with other single parents, this cruise offers a sophisticated escape that feels worlds away from daily responsibilities. The Instagram photos are just a bonus—the real reward is those moments of pure awe and tranquillity.

Making It Happen: Your Planning Checklist

SAIL Amsterdam‘s rarity makes planning essential. Since the event only happens every five years, and the private cruises offer limited space, booking early is non-negotiable.

Consider staying near the city centre to minimise travel time—especially important when managing kids or maximising your solo exploration time. The beauty of Amsterdam is that everything connects, so you can easily combine your SAIL cruise with other experiences. Maybe start with morning museums, enjoy your afternoon cruise, then end with dinner in a cosy brown café.

You Deserve This Extraordinary Memory

Being a single parent means making countless daily decisions, juggling endless responsibilities, and often putting everyone else’s needs before your own. But here’s the truth: You deserve experiences that feel extraordinary. You deserve moments that remind you why travel matters, whether that’s seeing wonder in your child’s eyes or rediscovering your own sense of adventure.

SAIL Amsterdam 2025 offers both in one remarkable setting. The event’s rarity makes it precious — your children will remember sailing among tall ships for the rest of their lives, and you’ll have created something truly special together. If you choose the solo route, you’ll have gifted yourself an experience that feeds your soul and reminds you of who you are beyond being someone’s parent.

Don’t let this opportunity sail away. Every single parent deserves a holiday that feels extraordinary. Let Amsterdam’s canals and tall ships be the setting for yours in 2025 — because some moments are worth the planning, worth the investment, and worth treasuring forever.

Families need variety, structure and a pace that works for all ages. Mallorca offers this balance through a mix of organised excursions, outdoor fun, cultural sights, and gentle downtime. This guide focuses on fun and relaxing things to do in Mallorca that make your trip enjoyable and smooth, especially when travelling solo with children.

Getting Out & About: Mallorca for Families

Organised day trips are an easy way to explore Mallorca with kids. Not having to deal with directions, public transport schedules, or parking just means a stress free experience. One of the most popular options for families is an island-wide journey that combines multiple sights and modes of transport. The trip includes a coach ride through mountain roads which gives children a view of Mallorca’s dramatic terrain. The journey continues on a wooden vintage train through Soller before you board a tram that will take you through orange groves toward the coast. It finishes with a boat trip past cliffs into the bay at Sa Calobra.

This format breaks up the day with variety, helping keep younger travellers engaged. These types of excursions are led by guides who explain local culture in simple terms and ensure plenty of rest points are included along the route. Make sure to book your island tour Mallorca experience with a reliable provider so that everything is planned for you and all the transfers are included. This makes for a much less stressful journey.

Family Beach Days and Water-Based Fun

When a slower pace is needed, Mallorca’s beaches offer the right balance between rest and activity. Playa de Muro and Cala Millor both have calm waters and nearby facilities. These spots are suitable for families thanks to shallow shorelines, nearby cafés, and toilet access.

If you’re looking to include more structured fun, Palma Aquarium has a strong reputation for being family-friendly. Its shark tank is among the deepest in Europe, and the touch zones appeal to curious little hands. Children can safely interact with sea stars and small marine life while older ones enjoy deeper learning through interactive displays. It even has an immersive 3D cinema. You can also cool off indoors during the warmer part of the afternoon.

For holidays with teenagers and active kids, Western Water Park near Magaluf is an excellent destination. Large slides, lazy rivers, and kids’ splash areas provide variety for all ages: Families with young children can spend time in the paddling zones while teenagers explore more adventurous rides. To beat the queues, book online before you visit or select quieter hours.

Scenic Village Stops That Work for Kids

If you are looking for quieter things to do in Mallorca, look for some pretty local villages and simply explore. Valldemossa and Deià are lovely places ideal for a morning or afternoon visit. Their narrow streets and small cafés create a relaxed atmosphere, and there’s usually something interesting for kids to notice, such as fountains, tiled steps, or bakery displays.

Valldemossa is definitely worth a visit with kids. Its wide pedestrian areas and the famous monastery courtyard offer space to move, and a stop for hot chocolate or a light lunch will give you and your children time to unwind. Deià, on the other hand, has a more artistic background and is more compact, perfect for little feet who enjoy slower strolls and short visits.

Mallorca for families: The charming mountain village of Valldemossa

Combining one of these villages with a nearby beach or a scenic viewpoint helps keep the day feeling balanced. There’s no need for long hours of sightseeing when short bursts combined with play opportunities work better for families.

Outdoor Activities with a Touch of Adventure

If you are an active family, you will find that there are plenty of things to do in Mallorca with kids, especially if you love outdoor experiences. We recommend booking a guided kayaking trip along Mallorca’s coastline – you won’t need any previous kayaking experience, as you will receive basic instruction and all the necessary gear. Some trips also offer snorkelling breaks, giving children a chance to spot fish in calm coves. These excursions usually cater to beginners and children over six years old.

For families seeking land-based fun, short coastal trails to spots, such as Sa Calobra or Cap de Formentor, offer just enough walking to feel adventurous. Make sure to carry water, snacks, and plenty of sun protection, especially if travelling during the hot summer months.

Mallorca for families: A day at the beach with kayaking

Mallorca has much to offer for families of all ages. For holidays with teenagers you could book an adrenaline activity, such as rock climbing, canyoning, quad biking, go-karting, or paintballing. They usually include all safety equipment and instructors experienced with family groups. Always check the minimum age requirement before booking to avoid disappointment.

Cultural Stops in Mallorca That Won’t Bore the Kids

Palma offers more than shopping streets and historical buildings. The city’s Gothic cathedral is impressive to walk through and doesn’t require long explanations to be appreciated. Stained glass, tall ceilings, and echoing spaces usually catch children’s attention quickly.

You could also rent bikes here and follow the coast around Palma’s marina. This activity gives children freedom to move while staying on safe cycle paths. Short detours lead to parks or beach cafés where you can stop without planning too much in advance.

Mallorca for families: The harbour of Palma de Mallorca

include visiting the print museum La Nueva Balear, where old machinery still operates, or taking part in seasonal farming visits that show traditional crop growing and animal care. These experiences offer gentle learning and break up the rhythm of beach and activity days.

Helpful Tips for Single Parent Travellers

Planning ahead reduces stress when you’re managing a holiday solo. Excursions that include transport and meals keep things simple. Look for fully-organised tours that include pick-up and drop-off at or close to your accommodation without countless stops at other hotels to reduce travel time.

Try to keep each day varied but manageable. For example, combine a short trip to a village with some beach time. A morning cultural visit followed by an afternoon in a water park often works better than full days packed with movement, leaving you with exhausted, overheated youngsters. Let your kids help choose one activity each day from a shortlist. This will create a sense of involvement and reduce resistance when it’s time to move on to the next thing.

Booking tickets online for popular attractions ahead of time helps avoid queues and disappointment. Mallorca island tour packages and water park passes are often available online and sometimes come with skip-the-line benefits.

Make it a Single Parent Holiday to Remember

There are plenty of things to do in Mallorca with kids, with most in reasonable travel distance no matter where you are based. A combination of scenic trips, water-based fun, and short cultural stops will provide enough excitement to keep children and teenagers entertained while giving adults moments to relax. With a combination of pre-planned and flexible stops, solo parents can create a smooth and rewarding single parent holiday in Mallorca.

But to make the most of it, a well-planned route, child-friendly activities, and a reliable vehicle are key.

Planning your route: Your itinerary to the Norwegian fjords

When planning your route through Norway’s fjords, it’s wise to balance scenic beauty with manageable drive times for the kids. The most famous Nordic fjords — Geirangerfjord, Sognefjord, and Nærøyfjord — are located in Western Norway and can be covered in 10 days starting from Bergen, with drives no longer than just over two hours.

Here is a suggested itinerary for your Norway road trip with kids:

Bergen, the “heart of the fjords”: Start your road trip through Norway in the charming coastal city of Bergen, easily reached by direct flight from London. The city is located between the Sognefjord and the Hardangerfjord but also has its own fjord, the Byfjorden. Explore Bryggen, Bergen’s historic harbour district, with its pleasant fish market, and take the Fløibanen, a funicular, from the city up the mountain of Fløyen, where you can go for a hike and take in the panoramic views across the city.

Voss: From Bergen, drive inland for just under two hours to reach Voss, locally known as Vossevangen, a beautiful village in the heart of Norway. Located between the Hardangerfjord and the Sognefjord – the longest and deepest fjord in Norway – it is famous for its stunning scenery and thrill-seeking adventures on offer, such as family rafting – the perfect destination if you are a teenage family looking for activity holidays. Don’t miss the magical waterfall of Tvindefossen when visiting.

Flåm/Aurlandsfjord: Continue your Norway road trip by taking the E16 motorway through the scenic Nærøydalen valley. You will pass Stalheimskleiva, one of the steepest roads in Northern Europe. It was closed for motorised vehicles in October 2023 but can still be used by pedestrians and cyclists. You should reach the village of Flåm in 1 h 15. Here you can hop on the scenic Flåm Railway, hike to the Brekkefossen Waterfall, take a fjord cruise on the Aurlandsfjord, or learn about the Vikings.

Gudvangen/ Nærøyfjord: Circle back for 20 minutes, stopping in Gudvangen on the southern tip of Nærøyfjord, a narrow fjord branching off from the large Sognefjord. It is one of only two Norwegian fjords declared a UNESCO heritage site due to its unique natural and cultural landscape. Take a ferry cruise through Nærøyfjord. You could even book a cruise to Flam and back if you fancy a break from driving. A Nærøyfjord cruise from Gudvangen to Flåm takes approximately two hours one way. You could even shuttle back to Gudvangen if you don’t fancy the boat ride back.

Sogndal/Sognefjord: Drive on to the village of Balestrand in the municipality of Sogndal in approx. 2h 10. Here in the heart of the Norwegian fjords, you can enjoy breathtaking views and a relaxed atmosphere. Take a dip in the cold water followed by a hot sauna, stroll through fragrant apple orchards, go on a scenic hike, or take your teens on a kayaking adventure on the Sognefjord.

Jostedalsbreen: The national park of Jostedalsbreen is en route to another Norwegian fjord, the Geirangerfjord. This stop breaks up the long drive and gives you a unique opportunity to admire the largest glacier in continental Europe. You could take the kids for a glacier walk and even hike on snowshoes up to the frozen lake and visit the ice cave.

Geiranger/Geirangerfjord: Cap your Nordic fjords adventure off with a trip north to Geiranger, another UNESCO-listed fjord. If you leave out the glacier, it’s a straight 4.5 to 5 hours to get to Geiranger. It’s well worth the trip to see what may well be the most spectacular fjord in the world. Majestic snow-covered peaks, steep cliffs, and wild waterfalls offer a truly stunning panorama. Drive around to enjoy the views or take a waterfall trail or boat trip to appreciate the stunning scenery.

Ålesund via Trollstigen: Drive the famous Trollstigen road from Åndalsnes/Isterdalen to the Trollstigen plateau. The serpentine road is due to re-open on 14 July 2025. You will pass through Valldal, known for its sweet strawberries and adventure activities such as rafting, climbing, kayaking, snowshoeing, and ski touring. After 2 hours 15 you will reach Ålesund, famous for its unique Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture. Surrounded by mountains and fjords, this beautiful port town is well worth a visit. The colourful city is a magical place with narrow alleyways dotted with charming seafood restaurants. Rent an e-bike to explore or hike up to Mount Aksla for the best views. You can also hire kayaks and SUPs and admire the city from the Brosundet canal that runs through its centre.

From Ålesund you can fly back to Bergen or directly back to London.

Estimated total driving distance: 1,200 to 1,500 km, best spread over 10-14 days.

Child-friendly stops and activities

The Norwegian fjords offer countless kid-approved activities. In Flåm, ride the steep mountain railway and visit the Flåm Railway Museum. In Geiranger, the Norwegian Fjord Centre provides interactive exhibits. Farms in Balestrand let children pet goats and learn about local produce. For families with thrill-seeking or outdoorsy teenagers, there are plenty of activities on offer, from kayaking and rafting to glacier walks and snowshoe hikes.

To break up long drives, plan regular stops at picnic areas, waterfalls, and scenic lookouts. Norwegian rest stops are clean and often scenic themselves.

Preparing for your Norway road trip: Tips for solo parents

Planning a road trip with kids as a single parent may sound daunting, but Norway’s family-friendly infrastructure helps ease the challenge. Book accommodation in advance, preferably with kitchen facilities and space for kids and teenagers to relax. Many fjord towns have family-run B&Bs and cabins that welcome children of all ages.

Ensure you have a variety of car-friendly snacks, reusable water bottles, and entertainment like audiobooks and travel toys. Download movies, games, and audiobooks, as well as maps and apps like the “Norway Travel Assistant” for ferry timetables and weather updates.

Weather and clothing

Fjord weather can be unpredictable. Summer (June to August) is the most family-friendly season, with average temperatures ranging from 13°C to 22°C. Bring layers, waterproof jackets, and sturdy shoes. For kids, pack backup clothes and fleece-lined rain gear.

Preparing the car for a long journey

A reliable vehicle is crucial. Before you set off, make sure your rental car has been serviced. According to autodoc.co.uk, the brake pads should be inspected and replaced if worn, especially before tackling steep mountain roads like Trollstigen.

Ensure tyres are suitable for varying road conditions and inflate them to the recommended pressure. Check all fluids — oil, brake, and windscreen washer. Norway has strict road safety laws, so ensure your lights, child seats, and documentation are in order.

Another key point is to avoid problems with air conditioning. Fjord valleys can heat up in summer, especially with the sun reflecting off water and rock. A faulty AC system can quickly turn a scenic drive into a stressful ordeal, particularly for children prone to motion sickness or heat sensitivity.

Photo: Norway’s landscapes offer numerous scenic routes perfect for a road trip.

Budgeting for a fjord adventure

Norway is known for its high cost of living, but smart planning can keep costs manageable. Staying in cabins or self-catering lodges reduces food expenses. Fuel prices in Norway average around £1.50 per litre in 2025, so budgeting for petrol is essential, especially given mountain driving.

Car ferries are common and often unavoidable. Most cost between £10 and £30 per crossing, with online payment or automatic number plate recognition at many sites. Toll roads are also widespread but efficient. The “AutoPASS” system allows seamless payment for most tolls. Use the Norway in a Nutshell planner or regional travel passes for combined rail, ferry, and bus discounts.

Safety and emergency tips

Here is how to stay safe on the road when driving with kids, especially when Always carry a roadside emergency kit: warning triangle, reflective vests, first aid supplies, torch, and spare tyre and repair kit. Norway’s emergency number is 112.

Mobile coverage is generally good but may drop in deep valleys or tunnels. Inform someone of your route and expected arrival times, especially if you plan hiking trips or ferry transfers.

Lastly, keep children engaged in the travel experience. Involve them in navigation, spotting things en route, or keeping a travel journal.

Photo: Nigardsbreen, which is part of the large Jostedalsbreen glacier.

Making the most of your Norway road trip

A road trip through the Norwegian fjords offers more than just scenic beauty. It teaches children resilience, appreciation for nature, and the joy of discovery. For single parents, it offers empowering experiences and priceless shared moments. With proper planning and preparation, you’ll return home with not just photos, but a head full of stories and laughter echoing from the fjords.

So, buckle up, download some Nordic folk tunes, and hit the road – the Norwegian fjords await.

It’s a place where culture, nature, and cuisine converge to create shared memories that linger long after the journey ends. With sun-drenched beaches, storybook cities, and immersive cultural experiences, this family-friendly destination knows how to keep every generation engaged. From toddlers building castles in the sand to teenagers exploring medieval fortresses, there is a multitude of things to do in Spain for families and single parents alike.

Discover Magic in Barcelona

Few cities captivate children and adults the way Barcelona does. The fantastical architecture of Antoni Gaudí, especially the enchanting Park Güell and whimsical Casa Batlló, feels like stepping into a storybook. The Sagrada Família, one of Gaudí’s masterpieces with its towering spires and intricate stained-glass windows, offers a surreal sense of awe for visitors of all ages.

Barcelona’s wide pedestrian promenades, such as La Rambla and Passeig de Sant Joan, make it easy to explore with a pushchair or curious pre-teen in tow. There is no shortage of things to do for families here, whether you fancy a visit of Barcelona Zoo in Ciutadella Park or a bike ride along the beachfront promenade.

Don’t miss the many hidden gems in this famous city, from the Casa Amatller, an example of Catalan modernism, to the marvellous maze at Horta Park, to a Flamenco show at the Palau Dalmases.

Beach Bliss on the Costa del Sol

Spain’s Costa del Sol is a magnet for sun-seeking families. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, this southern coast is tailor-made for seaside adventures. Towns like Estepona, which still has a traditional Spanish feel, Nerja, and Fuengirola offer family-friendly beaches, calm waters, and an abundance of things to do for families, as well as seaside restaurants where little ones are genuinely welcomed.

Bioparc Fuengirola is a beautifully designed zoo that focuses on immersive, naturalistic habitats. It’s a hit with children of all ages. Meanwhile, Aqualand Torremolinos offers a full day of splash-filled fun, complete with water slides, wave pools, and a kids’ zone.

Don’t hesitate to explore the lesser-known spots on the Costa del Sol, such as the village of Casares or the small town of Alhama de Granada. With their Moorish architecture and winding streets, they offer breathtaking scenery. If you are looking for a quiet beach, El Cañuelo stands out as a largely untouched spot, with crystal clear waters against a backdrop of imposing cliffs.

Step Back in Time in Granada

Granada is where history comes alive. At the majestic Alhambra Palace, families can walk through rose-scented gardens, trickling fountains, and intricately carved arches. The experience feels like wandering through a medieval Arabian Nights tale. Many tour operators offer child-friendly guides who bring the history to life through storytelling and interactive games.

After a morning exploring the fortress, hop aboard the city’s miniature tourist train to wind through the labyrinthine streets of the Albaicín district, the oldest neighbourhood of Granada and a World Heritage Site since 1984. It’s an exceptionally beautiful example of Hispano-Muslim architecture from the Middle Ages. Don’t miss trying churros con chocolate at a local café—one of Spain’s most beloved family indulgences.

Madrid: Culture and Play

Madrid might be Spain’s capital of culture, but it’s also a city that celebrates family. Start in the heart of the city at El Retiro Park, where families can rent rowing boats, explore puppet shows, or simply picnic under the shade of 19th-century trees. Just north of the park is the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales with many interactive experiences that turn learning into play. Equally hands-on is the Museo del Ferrocarril (Railway Museum), which can be found south of El Retiro. Continue your journey west for a chance to watch street performers, chase pigeons, and sample Spanish treats, such as jamón ibérico, olives, and fruit smoothies in cobbled squares like Plaza Mayor and Mercado de San Miguel.

There are many more things to do for families in the area: If you or your children are history buffs, you could continue with a tour of the Royal Palace before making your way to Casa de Campo, where you will find Zoo Aquarium de Madrid and a theme park, Parque de Atracciones, amongst many other attractions. With an area of over 4000 acres, this is Madrid’s largest park and a great place to visit if your kids need to burn off some energy after visiting Madrid’s top sights.

Island Adventures in the Balearics

The Balearic Islands — Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera — deliver everything from sandy escapades to cultural discovery. In particular, Mallorca has a lot to offer for families: The Palma Aquarium offers encounters with sharks and sea turtles, while the scenic Soller train, a vintage wooden railway, takes you through olive groves and mountain tunnels and past beautiful beaches and is well worth the ride.

In Menorca, quiet beaches with shallow waters and nature reserves teeming with birds and turtles offer peaceful alternatives to resort bustle. Families can kayak along the coast, go horseback riding, or visit lighthouses that seem plucked from adventure novels.

Whilst Ibiza is better known for its party scene, lesser-known Formentera is a fabulous destination for a beach holiday with kids. The smallest of the four inhabited Balearic islands has lots of beautiful sandy beaches and a relaxed vibe that both families and single parents will enjoy.

Valencia: Science Meets the Sea

Valencia’s futuristic City of Arts and Sciences is an architectural marvel and one of Spain’s most family-friendly attractions. Kids can admire giant dinosaurs in the Science Museum, enjoy interactive experiments, and watch 360-degree films in the planetarium. The Oceanogràfic, Europe’s largest aquarium, is the crown jewel — featuring everything from beluga whales to jellyfish lagoons.

Just a short tram ride away, the Malvarrosa Beach offers golden sand, family-run chiringuitos (beach bars), and plenty of space for kite-flying, sandcastle building, and sea-drenched fun.

Embrace Festivals and Local Traditions

If you are looking for truly immersive and unforgettable things to do in Spain for families, we highly recommend planning a visit of one of Spain’s many seasonal festivals where kids are welcome and included in the celebrations. La Feria de Abril in Seville dazzles with horse parades, flamenco dancing, and carnival rides. La Mercè in Barcelona fills the streets with human towers, puppet parades, and fireworks. These festivals are lively, colourful, and often free — perfect for families on a budget.

Practical Tips for Family Travel in Spain

Dining: Children are welcome almost everywhere in Spain, and most restaurants offer highchairs and kid-friendly options. Expect a later dining schedule, with locals eating dinner from 8 PM onwards.

Transport: Trains and buses are punctual, comfortable, and well-connected. Many offer family discounts or group travel passes.

Safety: Spain has a relatively low crime rate. Petty theft is, however, widespread, and you should protect your valuables and beware of pickpockets and vehicle crime.

Staying digitally connected: When you use Google Maps, pre-book transport or entry tickets to sights, check restaurant reviews, or download your boarding passes for your return home, it helps knowing that you are not paying over the odds for data. Using data abroad is risky, and buying a travel-focused eSIM from a provider like Simify means peace of mind, as you won’t have to worry about your data use or that of your teenagers.

Spain doesn’t just accommodate families — it celebrates them. Whether it’s when you are eating out, dancing at a street festival, or out sightseeing — kids are welcome everywhere you go. And this much is clear: You will never find yourself short of things to do in Spain for families.
