New for 2017 – a solo holiday to the magical city of Marrakesh for anyone travelling on their own. Maybe the kids no longer want to do the holiday thing with you or you just feel like break on your own to recharge your batteries? Why not explore a new destination with other solo travellers, enjoy adult company and relax in the knowledge that you’ve got your own local tour guide to hand who’s great company and ready to introduce you to the real Morocco.
During our solo holiday, we will be staying at an authentic riad in Marrakesh’s historic old town, referred to as the ‘medina’. The family-run Riad Mariana, winner of Tripadvisor’s prestigious Certificate of Exellence, is just a short walk away from all the main sights, such as the famous Djamâa el-Fna Square, the souks and the Koutubia Mosque. Our little riad has been reserved exclusively for our group of solo travellers. Its tranquil courtyard and small pool shaded by palm and papyrus trees offers the perfect retreat after a day out on the town. Our hotel further boasts a small spa, where you can have a traditional hammam or massage, as well as a great rooftop terrace with a breathtaking view of the Koutoubia Mosque and the Atlas Mountains.
All rooms are beautifully furnished in Moroccan style and come with ensuite bathroom, free WiFi and air-conditioning. Breakfast will be served on the rooftop terrace with its amazing views and include tea, coffee, fruit juices, typical Moroccan crêpes and sweet pastries, amongst others. For lunch and dinner, your tour guide will take you to authentic Moroccan eateries so you can experience the real Morocco.
Staying in a true riad is a unique experience. Riads are urban houses situated within the walls of the medina – the old city. They have thick medluk walls designed to protect from heat and cold as well as noise; thus riads look inward creating a place of tranquillity and comfort for its inhabitants, away from the hustle and bustle of the medina. These Moroccan homes are built around a courtyard, often beautifully decorated in a distinctive style, with a fountain or small pool shaded by scented trees such as citrus or orange trees. Bedrooms are usually on the upper floors along an arcade which runs around the central courtyard with balustrades around each storey. The rooftop terrace will have a pergola or awning under which breakfast and/or dinner is served for its guests. Originally built for wealthy families, riads are now heritage buildings and often converted into restaurants or guest houses which allow visitors an insight into Moroccan architecture, tradition and culture.
Throughout your solo holiday you will be looked after by our friendly local tour guide who will show you the very best Marrakesh has to offer. To ensure you make the most of your stay, we have prepared an itinerary exclusive to our group of solo travellers, including many of Marrakesh’s awe-inspiring sights. Our inclusive sightseeing programme includes:
- Djamâa el-Fna Square, the most famous square in Marrakesh with fortune tellers, snake charmers, musicians and (much) more
- The numerous souks in the medina (the old city) where you can grab a real bargain
- The towering Koutoubia Mosque, built in 1162
- The Saadian Tombs
- Medeersa Ben Youssef, the largest theological college in Morocco
- The magnificent Bahia Palace
Your tour guide will be with the group at all times to organise group dinners, as well as optional activities and excursions, which will be available at a local surcharge. Popular attractions include the Majorelle Gardens owned by Yves Saint Laurent, whose ashes are scattered in the gardens, or a camel ride, the stunning Ouzoud Waterfalls at the heart of the Atlas Mountains and a visit to a traditional Berber village in the Ourika valley. Participation in our itinerary is entirely optional, of course, and you are welcome to go off and explore the city on your own anytime the mood takes you.
Marrakesh is the most important former imperial city in the history of Morocco, and often referred to as the ‘Red City’ because the city wall and many buildings are made of red sandstone. It is divided into two parts: the medina, or historical districts, originally founded over 1,000 years ago as an oasis in the arid Haouz plain, and the new city, principally made up of the two districts of Gueliz and Hivernage. Marrakesh is located at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, and only a few hours away from the Sahara Desert. The medina is famous for its many narrow lanes and local shops while Gueliz is the more modern part of the city and home to many international restaurants and big brand stores.
The city boasts many famous sights including the Koutoubia Mosque (often called the ‘Eiffel Tower of Marrakesh’ by locals), Djamâa El-Fna square in the heart of the medina with its many musicians, dancers and story tellers, the beautiful El Bahia Palace with its tranquil courtyards and exotic garden with banana trees, and fascinating souks dotted across the city. Marrakesh is also the ideal starting point for discovering the best of the natural world that Morocco has to offer. Famous destinations within easy reach include the Ourika Valley in the Atlas Mountains with its breathtaking scenery and traditional Berber villages, and the Ouzoud Waterfalls, one of the most spectacular natural sights in Morocco.
