The farmhouse:

Our award-winning accommodation The Cottages at Blackadon Farm is one of Devon’s most sustainable businesses with solar panels, a spring water supply, locally and ethically sourced linens, furniture and fittings, and electric car chargers. It’s been named the South West’s best self-catering accommodation by South West Tourism Excellence Awards and just won Bronze in the Ethical, Responsible & Sustainable category at the VisitEngland Awards for Exellence 2023! We have rented the two largest barns, with five newly renovated ensuite bedrooms each, as well as a large well-stocked and modern kitchen and large dining and sitting areas with flat screen TVs each.

Located on the southern boundary of Dartmoor National Park, the farm enjoys panoramic views across the moor and the South Hams, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The site is an oasis of rural tranquillity and a safe place for children to roam. There is also a den for the kids to unwind and play games, a lovely south facing courtyard great for relaxing, a guest lawn overlooking the countryside, a BBQ area, private woodland, two resident miniature donkeys who help cut the grass, and two sprockerpoos!

South Devon – the coast, the South Hams and Dartmoor National Park

Our barns on the edge of Dartmoor, just outside the village of Moorhaven, enjoy unrivalled views of  unspoilt moorland on one side and the rolling South Hams countryside on the other, including views to the sea to the south in the distance. The nearest town is Ivybridge, which is less than 10 minutes away by car.  The ancient town is rich in history with a medieval packhorse bridge that gives the town its name and a number of characterful pubs offering speciality ales from local brewers. It is also the starting point of the Two Moors Way – a long distance walking route to Lynmouth on the North Coast of Exmoor.

From here you can discover the South Devon coastline, with its sandy expanses and stunning secluded coves, rugged cliffs, pretty coastal villages and diverse waterside market towns. You will also find some of the best beaches in the UK here, from sheltered bays to sandy stretches, no two beaches are the same and all offer hours of fun for families.

The South Hams are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stretching from the southern tip of Dartmoor National Park, to Devon’s south coast. The landscape here is unique and diverse dotted with quaint villages, nature reserves, and historic towns, such as famous Salcombe or Totnes. It is also a paradise for outdoor lovers.

Dartmoor National Park in the north of the South Hams is a vast moorland, and has been protected as a national park since 1951. An area of 954 km2 of heather clad moors, steep hills, and rugged tors, it is one of the last great wildernesses in the UK. The region is dotted with pretty villages, abandoned medieval farmhouses, Bronze Age stone circles and castle ruins. The landscape is best known for its wetlands and rock formations (tors), forests, rivers and roaming Dartmoor ponies. Its bottomless mires, craggy tors and thick mists have, no doubt, stirred the imagination of locals over centuries leading to colourful tales of pixies, ghosts and witchcraft, some of which are kept alive today through local tradition and folklore.

South Devon has something for everyone, from gentle walks to steep climbs, hacks over the moor on horseback and cycling, to kayaking and wild swimming. There are lots of outdoor activities and family attractions in and around the area as well as some excellent beaches within easy reach, such as Wembury, Bantham, Bigbury-on-Sea, Mothecombe, and Blackpool Sands.

"Ian the host went above and beyond what I would have expected. Thanks to his dedication, the holiday ran smoothly and a great time was had by all (both parents and children).
The activities were well organised and there was a variety to suit all ages, but you had the option to opt out of activities if you wished.
The farm was idyllic location for children to all play together (in our group from 4 up to 15 years) without their phones, and they all made really good friends. By the end of the week we felt like one extended family!
Asked 'what was the highlight of her week?', my daughter answered 'everything!'"

"We had a brilliant, fun, restful holiday with lovely people and lots of fun activities! I cannot recommend SPOH highly enough :)!"
- James, Marlow (8) & Clover (5) - single parent holiday in South Devon, August 2022
"Devon was an amazing location, so much to do! Our host was super and so helpful to all the parents. "
- Nicole & James (10) - single parent holiday in South Devon, August 2022
"I took my nearly 3 year old son and at times we would leave early from visits because he would need his nap, that's the only thing different about taking a toddler. But I think the nap was more for me than him!
The accommodation was perfect (I asked for a bed against the wall for co sleeping and I got what I wanted) but I still needed to keep a sharp eye on him when wondering around the place which is understandable because it is not enclosed. The accommodation was split and he liked to pop down and up all the time... I was more tired than he was! Every morning he would groom the donkeys and his favourite visit was the farm (cuddling the piglets) and the beautiful beach where he explored the rock pools looking for crab with all the other children on the holiday. Everyone was really helpful and were lovely company. We look forward to booking again next year. "

- Annabel & Jonty (2) - single parent holiday in South Devon, August 2022
"A fab holiday from start to finish. Sandra spoke to me on phone first as it was my first SPoH trip so I had some questions. Then when I got there it was so well thought out. Blackadon Farm was a great place in a beautiful setting. We loved that you could walk to the river and across the golf course to their clubhouse for yummy food. I was nervous as a single parent trying a holiday like this but Ruby was so welcoming and friendly. She really looked after us. She organised all our trips to various attractions as a group. She joined us on all the adventures and the chilled out evenings too. She got us chatting as a group and played board games with the kids in the evening so us mums could catch up over a glass of vino. We got on very well as a group. I'll be booking again! "
- Emma & Alissa (6) - single parent holiday in South Devon, October half term 2021
"I was hesitant about going as my son is only 2 years old, however our host was really welcoming and good with him and he had a great time mixing with the other children. The proximity of the room to the communal area gave me the chance to socialise in the evening too. We were able to join in with the daytime activities around the local area but we equally enjoyed playing in the stream and with the donkeys at the cottages. I’d definitely recommend this holiday for adults and children of all ages."
- Roberta & Emmy (2) - single parent holiday in South Devon, October half term 2021
"The holiday was really well organised and our host could not have been better. She was great company and helped us all bond together. My daughter enjoyed it very much."
- Karen & Ellie (12) - single parent holiday in South Devon, October half term 2021
