The Greek island of Kos

Kos is the third largest island of the 12 Dodecanese Islands that are located in the south eastern region of the Aegean Sea. It’s an island of tropical beauty and luxuriant vegetation, endless beaches, and a two thousand year history.

Excavations near Kefalos suggest that the island has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. In the 5th century BC, it suffered a devastating earthquake and was conquered by the Persians. In 460 BC, Hippocrates, the ‘father of modern medicine’, was born here, and is said to have taught his students under a plane tree, which can still be seen in Kos Town. Over the centuries, Kos was occupied by the Romans, Ottoman Turks and Italians. It has only been part of Greece since 1948.

Today, Kos’ endless sandy beaches and archaeological sites attract thousands of visitors every year. The beachfront resorts boast an abundance of tavernas, shops, bars and restaurants, while the villages inland are quieter and have kept much of their traditional charm. The island’s capital, Kos Town, is a small Mediterranean town with distinctive architecture and pretty tree-lined streets and a lovely place to enjoy a spot of shopping or indulge in Greek specialities in one of the many restaurants and cafés. The town is dominated by the 15th-century Neratzia Castle (“Castle of the Knights”) at its port. To the South of the castle you will find the ancient Agora (=market) ruins, with a temple, shrine and columns. The Agora of Kos is one of the largest of its kind to have been excavated in Greece to date. Built in the 4th century B.C., the Agora would have been the  commercial and social centre of Kos, which at that time was an important administrative centre, and a place for locals to trade and meet.

We are delighted to be returning to our 5-star hotel on Kos where we stayed with our single parent groups for many years in the past:

"Our second SPOH and probably not our last! Lovely hotel, perfect organisation, brilliant hosting, fantastic company. Can’t wait until next year. "
- Guy & Grace (9) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2018
"I have just returned from a weeks holiday in Kos with an amazing group of like minded parents. My daughter had fun and made many new friends who we intend keeping in contact with and whom we’d love to meet up with again on another Single Parents holiday. I laughed for the whole week and met so many lovely people - I can honestly say it was one of the best holidays that I have ever been on.
Our host was available and helpful at all times but also allowed us valuable space to relax. Activities were available if we wanted to take part however we were at no point pressured into taking part."

- Gaynor & Freya (13) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2018
"I have never been on something like this, but the whole organisation of the people that came really eased the process of getting to know everyone. The kids loved making new friends and playing all day! Accommodation, food and staff were brilliant. We will be going again!"
- Rodney & Ava (10) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2018
"Wow, what a week. This far surpassed expectation. I laughed more in one week than I think I have in the last year.
"It was so much fun" - Daisy age 11yrs. "Like, the best ever" - Freya 14yrs
Thank you to Jane and our new friends for creating memories that will last for ever."

- Holly, Freya (14) & Daisy (11) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2018
"The hotel was beautiful. Jane is a truly amazing and wonderful host. Always friendly and approachable but never pushy or inappropriate. She formed a strong bond with all the children and provided a much needed respite for parents. She liaised with the rather rigid staff of the hotel e.g. spa bookings, and restaurant table bookings manager. Jane went over and above her role, giving parents a rest and generally assisting in a professional way aka Mary Poppins or Nanny McPhee!
"

- Imogen & Noah (12) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2017
"My daughter rated this holiday as "the best one ever" and I agree with her! Superb accommodation, excellent organisation and lovely host and fellow travellers. By the end of the week the group felt like one big family, with happy children and relaxed parents all enjoying each other's company and looking out for each other. If you are wondering, as I was, whether this sort of holiday is really your thing, all I can say is "go for it" - I'm glad I did. "
- Guy & Grace (8) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2017
"We had a lovely week in Kos with lots of lovely like minded people. The hotel was just as the pictures showed. The weather was fantastic. "
- Melanie & Emily (15) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2017
"Thank you Sandra and team, my kids loved Kos, good food, great host in Tennessee, good pools, weather. Basically a very good holiday!"
- Simon, Lottie (7) & Elodie (5) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2015
"This is the fourth SPOH holiday that my son (13yrs) and I have been on and I would thoroughly recommend it to other single parents. We have some truly wonderful memories which my son and I will always cherish."
- Jacinta & James (13) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2013
"I booked the SPOH with some trepidation having never tried a group holiday before. I need not have worried as it turned out to be the best holiday I have ever been on as a single parent with my boys. All three of us had a superb time and we made new friends, which I hope we will keep for life. I am already looking at the SPOH website for next year."
- Jane, Luke (15) Joe (13) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2013
"Well organised holiday in lovely hotel with great views and large pool that never felt crowded. Food in main restaurant was excellent. Barely saw my children all week as they were having so much fun with other children on the holiday. Climate perfect as there was always a cool sea breeze. Would definitely recommend both Kos and SPOH."
- Catherine, Joe (16), Harry (13) & Tilly (7) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2013
"I cannot recommend SPOH high enough!
The booking process is very smooth and after going on 3 SPOH holidays I know the hotel and support when there will be fantastic! My son and I have made great friends on each trip and Will has had a super time with children his age. Cannot wait to book for 2014!"

- Jane & Will (9) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2013
"The holiday was very well organised and offered us a stress-free and fun time away."
- Paul, Alice (14) & Daisy (12) - single parent beach holiday in Kos, August 2013
