Single Parent Holiday: Discover the Green Heart of Italy with a Fun Family Programme

This holiday is currently not available. Please visit single parent holidays in Italy for current dates and details of our Italy trips.

This fully-organised group holiday in Italy is exclusively for single mums and single dads and their children.

will be staying at the charming 3-star country hotel La Macchia, located only 2 km away from the historic town of Spoleto in beautiful Umbria. Known as Il cuore verde d’Italia – the green heart of Italy – Umbria is brimming with natural beauty and history. Nestled amongst the rolling green hills and winding river valleys is a host of medieval hillside towns, boasting both culture and charm.

Our hotel is the ideal base to get to know this stunning part of Italy whilst having a relaxing and fun holiday with your children and other single parent families: Surrounded by unspoilt countryside and a large park with olive trees, which is also home to the hotel’s farm animals, including donkeys, hens and ducks, our hotel’s facilities include a good-sized pool with sun loungers and parasols, a spacious and partly covered terrace with views of the surrounding gardens where breakfast is served, and the main restaurant, where we will dine every evening. The cuisine’s focus is on Umbrian and Italian dishes using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

All hotel rooms are furnished in a rustic Italian style and come with air-conditioning, en-suite bathroom with hair dryer, TV, telephone, free WiFi and views of the surrounding countryside. There is plenty to do for the children in the hotel grounds, from stroking the animals, playing table tennis, volleyball and badminton to enjoying the play area or watching films in the TV room in the evenings whilst our parents enjoy a glass of wine on the patio.

Umbria is criss-crossed by winding river valleys and hills along the Tiber’s central basin, and is extremely fertile, but also extends high into the Apennines Mountains. It is home to parks and nature reserves, as well as Central Italy’s two largest lakes, mineral and thermal springs, and the notable waterfall of Cascata delle Marmore, where the waters dive into the River Nera over a spectacular 550-foot drop. Umbria enjoys a wealth of Roman and Etruscan settlements, and its rich culture is strongly linked with the past, centering on cuisine, art, music and wine. Some of the country’s most beautiful and best-preserved medieval and ancient cities can be found here.

The walled city of Spoleto, 2 km from where we are staying, is a busy tourist attraction (and an insider tip), with a wonderful mix of remnants from its Roman and medieval past, great restaurants, shops and gelaterias. The city’s historic sites include a first-century Roman amphitheatre and theatre, the soaring Ponte delle Torri aqueduct, a restored Roman house, a fortress, fountains, parks, the beautiful cathedral with its frescoes, porches and works of art. The medieval city of Assisi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the birthplace of St. Francis and his order of monks. It contains an ensemble of masterpieces which have made it a fundamental reference for art history, and is home to a wide range of galleries, museums and architectural masterpieces – as well as great restaurants and boutique craft shops.

Below is a selection of testimonials from our holidays for single travellers and their children in rural Umbria:

"My sons and I thoroughly enjoyed our first SPOH holiday in Spoleto. I had half-feared beforehand that it would be one big therapy session for bitter divorced people, but the truth could not be further from that - it is a chance to have fun and share a wonderful part of Italy with a group of like-minded adults with children of a similar age.
The organised activities took my sons out of their normal comfort zone (for example there was quite a lot of walking) but to my pleasant surprise they embraced the challenge, partly because it was fun and partly because they were inspired by the older children. The food at the hotel was really excellent (and I don't say that often), and the staff were happy to serve drinks outside when asked. Claudia did a wonderful job of herding the parents and keeping everyone happy. "

"We had a really relaxing and enjoyable week staying in the company of other families, Claudia our guide and Roberta the hotel Manager. One of the biggest draws was the hotel with its family friendly atmosphere and approach. The food was fantastic both for the adults and if the kids wanted something simpler, that was no problem either. The pool was just the right size and kept the kids occupied whilst giving the adults valuable space and time to relax. Claudia, our guide, was from the nearby town, Spoleto, so knows and clearly loves the area. The pace of the holiday was good and never felt like we had a whistle stop tour of places to go and things to do. When we ventured out there was a good mix of cultural and active trips to enjoy. The area is beautiful and comparable to Tuscany in terms of nature and architecture. My son especially enjoyed the rafting, high-wiring in the activity park and the trip to the impressive waterfalls. Overall I would recommend this holiday for those who want a variety of relaxation, great food, personal service, culture and activities. "

"A great holiday if you like walking combined with fabulous food and wine! The hotel was very child friendly and provided excellent food every day. The hotel manager Roberta and her staff could not do enough for us. The days out were long days and as it was over 30C I would imagine that young children would struggle with the walking needed. However we really enjoyed the trips and our guide Claudia made every effort to make our stay as interesting and pleasant as possible. My son really enjoyed the white water rafting while my favourite trip was to Azzizi. We had 2 days by the pool which were excellent as we were taken to see all the animals the hotel has and we also made pizza one evening under the expert eye of the hotel chef. All in all I would highly recommend this hotel."
